Our journey has begun…

Welcome to the Dog Ranch Revolution! We will be documenting 365 straight days of raising and training a puppy! We have included everything from finding the right puppy, how to prepare for the puppy, and getting started on your training journey.

We started our journey in early 2023 starting with researching and finding the right breeder for our next puppy prospect. Since we have dreams to perform and extract as much potential as possible, we are looking for a healthy puppy to perform at a high level with a stable mind.

We’ve Reached the six month mark!

PART 2 OF OUR JOURNEY: We’ve started a consistent foundation with household management, skill work and socialization…and now we are headed into adolescence!

*TO CONTINUE VIEWING beyond DAY 114, YOU MUST VIEW DAY 114 OF 365: 6 months: 1-11-24 & USE THE “NEXT” ARROW TO PROCEED FORWARD.

Utilizing the crate

Realistically, most people are going to start like this four month old Golden. They are only going to utilize the crate when they leave or at night; when in reality incremental separation while you are physically home is a critical training necessity to build strong generalization and confidence in all circumstances.

 Recall

I hear it time and time again, "my dog just won't come when he is called." Many dog owners become increasingly frustrated and confused with recall because they want to give their dog the freedom of being off leash, but simply just cannot trust them.

Things to consider:

  • Did you create indifference and neutrality from a young age vs. allowing your puppy or dog to interact with every person and every dog, and chase and stimulate itself with everything that moves?

  • The environment and its many distractions. Have you exposed and practiced with your dog in multiple locations under a variety of circumstances?

  • The distance at which you are calling your dog from

  • The fact that you may be calling your dog without having his attention at all. Is your dog mid-rabbit chase or being reinforced by being pet by someone else?

  • If you are more valuable than the distractions. Have you worked to build a valuable relationship with your dog?

Where to start to build a strong recall:

  • Make sure your dog knows his name and that it means to look at you

  • Build value for your dog being at your side and engaging with you

  • Half of training is being prepared, setting rules and guidelines, and managing your dog
